Scott Douglas Rozelle and Lothar Reh, laureates of the CAS Award for International Cooperation in Science and Technology in 2007, have both been honored with the State Friendship Award and the State Award for International Science and Technology Cooperation in 2008.

    Scott Douglas Rozelle and Lothar Reh, laureates of the CAS Award for International Cooperation in Science and Technology in 2007, have both been honored with the State Friendship Award and the State Award for International Science and Technology Cooperation in 2008.

    Rozelle, an agricultural economist from Stanford University, has endeavored to collaborate with the CAS Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources in conducting research on China's agriculture and rural development. He has made outstanding contributions to promoting academic research in China in the field of agricultural economics and policy, improving the world's understanding about the rural reform in China, and fostering young research scientists for the Institute.

    Reh, a pioneer in the development of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich), has worked with the CAS Institute of Process Engineering (IPE) to create conditions for research and promote the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement between IPE and. ETH Zürich. According to the agreement, the ETH Zürich donated a whole set of industry-scale CFB experimental equipment to IPE in the name of the Swiss Government,which was an important contribution to the establishment of a research platform for combining theory with experiment, and has produced extensive influences among the international academic community and industry.

    A total of 50 foreign experts received the 2008 Friendship Award at a ceremony held on 27 September at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. On 29 September, Chinese Premier WEN Jiabao met with the winners. Set up in 1991, the Award is China's highest award for foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to China's economic and social progress.

    The National International Scientific and Technological Cooperation Award is to recognize foreign scientists, science and technology engineers and managers, or organizations that have made important contributions to China's bilateral or multilateral scientific and technological cooperation.
